Challenge: Party of One

They say the most important relationship you have is the one you have with yourself. I truly believe this! When I’m alone, I am able to sort through all kinds of things like stresses, feelings and ambitions, because being alone gives me the time and peace to hear my own voice. It also allows me to enjoy that voice (I can’t be the only one who cracks up at her own jokes!).

Some of my favorite self-dates include:

• Reading a book at a café
• Enjoying a spa day
• Lying out in the backyard
• Dining at an outdoor restaurant and people watching
• Mall walking / window shopping

This week, I am going to schedule myself a solo date and I’m challenging you to do the same. I am thinking I’ll take me, myself and I to a movie — have any of you ever gone to a movie theater alone before? It feels unnatural and awkward going to
places like that all by your lonesome but it can be a very liberating experience. Plus, more popcorn for me!

Are you with me on this one? What’s your favorite thing to do by yourself?

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Definitely window shopping, eating alone at a restaurant and reading a book at a cafe. They are my go-to ‘me time’ activities. Yes, I agree with you about the idea of watching movie alone as a me time activity. It also means that you won’t have to worry about your make up when watching a sad romance movie

  2. Laying out in the backyard while listening to music is perfect! I also love choreographing by myself. It allows me to just be myself!

  3. Not sure if you actually read this. It’s santi from lva. I’m living in nyc and yesterday I discovered the company I work for is shutting down operations in the us. I was going to treat myself but now I’m stressed and kinda desperate. If you know anyone hiring for anything here in the city, then I could treat myself. Also if your still in town and want to gab a coffee that would be amazing. Congrats on your everyday success. Your now an inspiration to millions. My email is if you do feel like reaching out to and old friend and a huge fan. Stay amazing Jules. Santi.

  4. I love this! I consider myself to be an introverted person, so alone time for me is vital. Some activities I enjoy doing alone include sketching, painting, shopping, dancing ( I will dance with other people, but I also love doing it solo) and listening to music while I’m driving. Sometimes I’ll sing to the top of my lungs. Other times, I’ll just take in the lyrics. I also have found that since becoming a mom, I value alone time even more. Don’t get me wrong. I love being with my little one, but I can also give more to my child when I have some time for myself. So, yes, Julianne! I accept this challenge! 😉

  5. I love my me time! One of my favorite things to do is go to the movies by myself for a matinee and then go to Barnes and Noble afterwards and get lost in the aisles.

  6. I really enjoy reading a book at a café, drinking coffee and sometimes just watch the people around me. I love your “going alone to a movie” challenge! I’ve never actually thought about it, but I will absolutly try! I love spending time alone, and recently I’ve been on our family cabin up in the Norwegian mountains. In four days I’ve been reading two books, and I love it. I like spending time with my family, playing games, eat, talk and go skiing. But sometimes, some time alone is important, also when you are with family for a long time.

Thank You, Julianne, for inspiring me! I hope you have some lovely and really good time alone with a book or a movie – and happy easter! ❤️

  7. I had a lot of school work to do this weekend, and one of my assignments is for a writing class. So I don’t know if that counts as a solo date….but instead of doing it at home where I could get distracted, or interrupted by others I decided to go out to have some coffee with my school work. While work is a main reason why I’m sitting here now, its still nice to have this solo time, where no one really knows where I ran off to, no one can poke their head into my room to bug me about one thing or another. It’s just me and my thoughts which is pretty important since the assignment I’m working on requires a lot of introspection, and thinking. I wasn’t living in NY for a while and I used to have solo coffee dates often, which were great. But ever since moving back to NY it has not happened so it felt good to do this, and spend some ‘me’ time. One thing I loved most was choosing to walk the ten minutes to the cafe, as opposed to driving. I think sometimes we are in such a rush to get things done, errands to take care of, places to get to, we rely on the gym for our exercise, but if you can walk its some great alone time as well as free exercise, and I highly recommend it.

  8. I have always wondered what it would be like going to a movie alone (Its oddly intimidating). I am nervous to try it but at the same time I want to. How exciting to pick the movie I actually want to see! I have only had a solo dine in meal at a restaurant once but it was great! I got to read my book and took all the time I wanted!

    Kristy xoxo

  9. I really love being on my own and reading a book or maybe even watching a film, never been to the cinema alone though (should do that once). Window shopping is basically one of my favourite things to do, specially when you have no other place to be and have plenty of time.

  10. Thanks for the suggestions! This is a great post. I thInk I have realized now, more than ever how important it is to have some time alone to think freely without interruption. I enjoy taking a drive on a warm sunny day. It is really liberating to drive with the wind in your hair when the weather is nice! Of course, the beach on a nice day is my number 1 option… Nothing better than laying ou, listening to music, and going for a dip in the ocean 🙂
