What Does Success Mean To You?

The dictionary defines the word “success” as: the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame. Wait, what? That’s certainly not my definition of success. Strayer University brought attention to this interpretation of the word and they didn’t just give it the ol’ eye roll. They’ve actually started a campaign to redefine the Webster Dictionary’s meaning of success. How cool is that?!

I don’t believe success has anything to do with wealth or prestige. Someone could be extremely well off financially, able to afford anything money can buy, but not have a great group of friends or a family to enjoy it with. That doesn’t sound very successful! To me, success has more to do with the moments that make us feel spectacular, attaining personal achievements or goals, and finding happiness.

When Strayer University wanted to shoot footage of me doing something that makes me feel successful, it was a no brainer. I chose to let them film me being active, working out and dancing since that’s what makes me feel alive and like my true self. Those feelings are the makings of personal success.

What do you guys think about this petition? What’s your definition of success?

  1. This was the most inspiring video I’ve ever seen. I have watched it 5 times over the weekend! Thank you for inspiring all your fans!

  2. And I hope you and the university can get the definition changed so that in the future, the kids won’t even know there was ever a different definition 🙂

  3. My deffinition of success is anything that you accomplish that is great in life! You become successful by doing what you love in a positive and happy way! You because successful my surrounding yourself with a group of people that make you Positive and want your dreams to come true as well as theirs! I haven’t become as successful as I want to yet because I’m only 14 ( tomorrow 15 )! But I did become succesful! I had accomplished something amazing! Actually 2 things! Number one I get a solo in dance! I use to be extremely comfortable in dance but then I fell on stage so I put myself in a bubble and stayed in my comfort zone …. I was scared to try new things and scared I would embarrass myself! But then I saw you preform live and I met and my life changed! I have tried harder than ever and I earned a solo … A TAP SOLO!!! It was the best day of my life!! ( besides the day I met you, Derek, and Hayley ) I was crying when I got my solo!! I never realized how much effort I put in till I was doing it on stage and when I came off I said ” finally my hard work paid off “!! I have become very successful lately! Thanks to you of corse! And 2 I use to be alone! I had no friends, I got bullied to the point where I was scared and j would cry! But I watched your interviews and movies and dances and you taught me to put myself around people who make me happy and before I can make anyone else happy I have to be happy and that’s what I did! I feel like I have become so successful because I overcame my fears of being different around my friends and not being me! Not I ALEXA around my friends and I’m so happy! I have because so successful over then years and I know I have many more years of being successful to come! I will never forget the day I met you and thank you so much for changing my life and helping me become successful!!! I love you Julianne Hough to the moon and back! Thank You so much!

  4. To me, success isn’t necessarily failing, but it’s having the courage to try. If I’ve at least tried, then I feel like I’ve succeeded. It took me awhile to get to this point because I hate failing. However, as I become older, I find that I have more courage to “just go for it” than I did when I was younger. I don’t want to talk myself out of goals or decisions anymore because I’m scared that I will fail or even because I’m worried what others will think about me. We only get one life, and I want to make the most out of it. Living in fear gets me nowhere. P.S. I love these posts about topics that really make you think. 🙂

  5. Being 22, this is a question I often think about! I’m still really stuck on “finding myself”, and defining what happiness is to me rather than letting society define it for me, as well as finding what success is to me. It’s a weird place to be, but I’m glad we’re addressing things like this!

  6. You are such a huge inspiration Jules! You show that you’re success are not based on luck or a very good appearance (even though you look amazing, but you show all sides of yourself, not just the glamorous one), but on hard work and an extreme dedication. And most of all; as you mention here: you are successful because you are happy doing what you do!

  7. Jules, there is a picture of you with two blonds at the Cosmo party. The press has state those are your sisters—is that at all true?I don’t think so. Can you clarify. On a side note, success is when you see that DWTS made a perfect decision to hire you–a kind, talented, and gracious woman.

  8. Love this campaign! I completely agree with you. Success is not about how much money or material things you have, it’s about the people and love you have in your life. Love is what truly makes us happy 🙂

  9. What is ny definition of success? I don’t really know. Ever since I am older (46 now) I think it is about finding your place in life. The place one fits in and feels comfortable. Which I do now.
I wish I would feel great or successful when moving or working out. In that case I might do it more often. But that never gives me this feeling. Where is the key to that?
