I read a quote last week that really resonated with me. It said, “How to be happy: Decide every morning that you are in a good mood.” It sounds perfectly feasible to take this on when you’re actually in a happy place however when you’re going through a rough patch or having a particularly difficult time the suggestion to simply choose to be cheery sounds ridiculous. But maybe not totally. We truly have more power over ourselves than we realize.
My weekend was kind of hectic. I had a lot going on in my personal and professional life that was causing me to become kind of a cranky girl. Okay, perhaps a majorly cranky girl. When I woke up on Sunday, I could feel the weight of my stresses carrying through from the night before. It was there in bed, before my feet even hit the floor that I remembered the quote. I said to myself, “Decide to be in a good mood. Choose to be happy this morning.” and I meant it. Something clicked within me that said, ‘yeah! I don’t have to be a cranky pants! The sun is shining, my dogs tails are wagging, and there’s a delicious breakfast downstairs just waiting to be whipped up!’ I chose to be in a good mood – and it worked! Why start the day off with a dark cloud? There are always positive things to focus on or look forward to even if they’re very basic and every day. I know from my experience, this way of thinking turned my day around.
