My Morning Mantra

I read a quote last week that really resonated with me. It said, “How to be happy: Decide every morning that you are in a good mood.” It sounds perfectly feasible to take this on when you’re actually in a happy place however when you’re going through a rough patch or having a particularly difficult time the suggestion to simply choose to be cheery sounds ridiculous. But maybe not totally. We truly have more power over ourselves than we realize.

My weekend was kind of hectic. I had a lot going on in my personal and professional life that was causing me to become kind of a cranky girl. Okay, perhaps a majorly cranky girl. When I woke up on Sunday, I could feel the weight of my stresses carrying through from the night before. It was there in bed, before my feet even hit the floor that I remembered the quote. I said to myself, “Decide to be in a good mood. Choose to be happy this morning.” and I meant it. Something clicked within me that said, ‘yeah! I don’t have to be a cranky pants! The sun is shining, my dogs tails are wagging, and there’s a delicious breakfast downstairs just waiting to be whipped up!’ I chose to be in a good mood – and it worked! Why start the day off with a dark cloud? There are always positive things to focus on or look forward to even if they’re very basic and every day. I know from my experience, this way of thinking turned my day around.

What do you guys think about choosing to wake up in a good mood? Will you give it a try? Let me know how it goes!

xo Jules

Very Christian without the specific religious content. The Bible commands and exhorts people to rejoice, like it’s doable. Maybe your rough spot can give you compassion too, for the hearts breaking across America when you left the marriage market…

    • Laurie Dumas-Ruel

Not necessarily Christian, I’ve read many books that encourage the same thought process even though they take in consideration views from various religions. Choosing to be happy and in a good mood is literally your own, personal choice. It doesn’t have anything to do with religion, although you might choose to associate with your personal religious beliefs if you, personally, wish to do so.

      • Susan Rethy

Thank you for your response to Mr. Summers III.

        • Frank Wynerth Summers III

          Thanks…

      • Frank Wynerth Summers III

I said Christian and added a modification. The way that the universe works is that there are many relationships between different value systems and lots of people aspire to the same things. “Not necessarily” makes your sentence true but also means that it does not really contradict my comment.

        • Susan Rethy

Mr. Summers — it’s not a question of whether Laurie’s response contradicts yours, but whether when something so universal is involved it’s necessary/desirable to announce attribution to one particular religion. For example, I come to the truth/desirability of this kind of morning mantra from a psychological/energetic perspective having nothing to do with any kind of religion at all.

      • Susan Rethy

To Laurie — somehow Mr. Summers thought I was thanking him when actually I was thanking you for responding to Mr. Summers. I appreciate what you said.

      • Frank Wynerth Summers III

        Susan,
You are entirely counterfactual when you say it has nothing to do with religion. I see it irritates you and I can accept that. Laurie and I were conversing whether she is irritated or not. She had a point and it was reasonable to respond to it in the way I did. It was reasonable for her to make the points she made too.

Many different comments appear on this stream and mine was scarcely the most explicitly religious. That is not even a close thing. We live on this planet together and there is some utility in drawing connections out.

Anyway you can probably avoid having coffee with me pretty easily if that is your principal area of concern. I think it’s sort of a minor and accurate comment that I made. I have been a preacher from time to time but I wasn’t really preaching to you. Happy Labor Day!

That’s kind of how I look at reading your website. Every morning I read one of your blogs/articles and it makes me smile. I choose to start my day in a positive way by reading your website ๐Ÿ™‚ thanks for putting me in a great mood every morning Jules!!

  • Laurie Dumas-Ruel

I absolutely love love love love this! Waking up this morning from a previous very bad night, this was the perfect way to start my day! I’ve read many things along those same lines – positiveness and a good mood are a choice that you are free to make, and you are the one that has the control over your spirit and emotions. I love this! (Did I say that already?)

Even the smallest of things to be thankful for…I’m thankful that I woke up this morning, had a warm place to sleep, a job to go to…. helps me. There is too much negativity in the world and easy to get swept up in it. Be thankful you are alive, you are a lot better off than some ๐Ÿ™‚

Wonderful idea!!!! Let me tell you…I always think about this and it definitely works for me!!! Thanks for sharing Jules! Have a great day! โค๏ธ??

  • Rose Dawson

I do that and it works for me because I am very committed; I mean it when I think I’m in a good mood. Plus, my co-workers are so crazy that they’ve become a good example NOT to follow!!! ? I want to be happy! (i really hope they don’t read your blog and see this, though, or you will have to give me advice to fix that!?)

This is really optimistic and uplifting! Love all of your blog posts Jules! They’re absolutely wonderful! To start a day in joyful mood really makes you look at everything throughout the day in a different sort of light! Waking up is a joy! Having a home, family, and love are all joys of life! I really enjoyed this post! Keep em’ coming! ๐Ÿ˜€

I started about a year ago to wake up and make a mental list of things that I am grateful for. When I wake up with the “to do” list rattling around inside my brain, I Stop – and switch to the Gratitude list. Someone challenged me to write down 100 things I’m grateful for and that list grows everyday – on paper and inside my head! Thanks Jules! This is a great topic :))

  • Lynn Dozeman

Jules, I feel so connected with you and your family! You alway seem make a post at the right time. The other day, a friend asked how I was doing. I was feeling cranky, irritable, etc…the best way I could describe it to her was, “there is a disturbance in the force”. I made a decision to take some quiet time away from the hussle and bustle of life to sit and be. It sure did help. I also realized I had missed writing my morning pages, which is a tool recommended in a book called, “The Artist Way” by Julia Cameron.

  • Rachel Wagner

I love this topic because it’s something I preach but don’t always follow. I have OCD, so a lot of negativity clouds my brain. I try SO hard to not let that roll into all parts of my life, but it can be tough. But I will take this positive challenge and try this.

You are a great role. Thank you for being so naturally positive and honest ๐Ÿ™‚

  • It’s definitely a great idea. I have to remind myself the same thing – sometimes throughout the day! And I definitely feel like a grump when my dog is happy and excited to see me, and I’m scowling! We should look to our dogs for guidance ๐Ÿ™‚

This reminds me of one of my favorite books and favorite authors….Wayne Dyer. The book is called, “Change Your Thoughts – Change Your Life.” Such a simple thing to do, yet difficult at the same time. This book is currently $1.99 on Amazon.

Perfect quote to start the day off. I often wake up and still feel exhausted, so I will be trying this quote tomorrow morning. Lets hope I can change how I think tomorrow! X

I can definitely relate to this. Yesterday my 5-year-old was a bit cranky, and I found myself becoming cranky as well. It turns out that he was just really tired. He’s going to school all day for the first time. So, it’s been an adjustment. However, a good night’s sleep helped us both. I told myself that today would be better, and it was. I think an earlier bedtime might help our problem. Having a positive mindset is definitely a great idea. I also find that taking time for myself helps take away the stress. I’ve recently taken up painting. It has been so therapeutic. I can get into my zone, paint something beautiful and forget about the hassles of life…at least for a little while. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Jules- I don’t know If you’re going to see this but thanks so much for posting! It’s really encouraging to hear that I’m not the only who has to make a conscious effort to start the day with happiness. Thanks for being so open and honest with us! For me I make a list sometimes mentally but mostly on paper of all the things I’m thankful for. Then when I’m having a bad night I can read over it in the morning to remind myself of all the ways I’m blessed!

  • TreesMerDersGleeks

Waking up with a good mood is important! I will definitely try to wake up in a good mood, even though school is so draining! But after these next few months, I will definitely be less stresses and in a better mood!
