Take It Outside: Exercises for Summer

Why spend more time inside than necessary when the weather is this gorgeous?! I’ve rounded up some of my favorite ways to turn up my workouts by taking them outside with these awesome accessories. This way we can work on our fitness while having fun in the sun — a win/win if you ask me!

As with any workout you do, be careful, and if you’re body is telling you it’s had enough, be sure to listen! The outdoor elements can make any exercise more challenging, so start slow and work your way up to expert level workouts slowly.

1. Pool Party

Water resistance training is what’s up. Due to the low impact, working out in the water is less stressful on your joints, bones, and muscles. Take your workout to the pool using water weights, gloves or even a weighted belt.

Pool Workout Challenge:
Stay in the shallow end of the pool for this workout.

• Run in place for 2 minutes.
• Immediately do 20 jumping jacks.

Without resting, repeat this set 3 times.

2. Beach Booty

Trudging through sand is extra challenging compared to walking or running on pavement or grass. Not only will you burn extra calories cruising on sand, when doing so barefoot you’re also strengthening your ankles and feet. Long walks on the beach never sounded so intense!

Sand Workout Challenge
Go to the dry, soft part of the sand furthest from the water.

• 1 minute of lunges
• 1 minute of high knees
• 1 minute of lunges
• 1 minute of jumping jacks

Repeat this set three times, resting for 30 seconds between sets.

Stay hydrated and hands free by wearing a belt like this one. Don’t forget your sweat and waterproof sunblock!

3. One-with-Nature Hike

There’s something so energizing about being on a dirt trail, with nothing but rocks, trees and blue sky ahead of you. Bonus points if you take your favorite dog and a person you love to sweat with! Having a companion will keep you motivated and pushing ahead, so you can truly get an incredible workout.

Hike Workout Challenge
Do these exercises when hiking uphill only.

• Sprint 30 seconds
• Walk briskly for 2 minutes
• Stop and do 25 lunges

Repeat this set 4 times, resting as needed between each.

  1. I love this! Thank you, Jules! I will definitely try these challenges. You are so inspirational, girl. You put a smile on my face every time I see one of your posts. You set such a good example of how young people should live – a alife filled with love, joy, happy memories with dear friends, movement and laughter. I am amazed and inspired by the way you balance your private life and your work life and you manage to excel in both. I love it! <3

  2. Awesome! The best part of working out next to water is being able to cool off after the workout. It feels amazing! I’ve been exercising with my 6 year old in the pool by throwing toy rockets, and then we take turns fetching them. 🙂

  3. Love all these ideas! My boyfriend and I go hiking in the woods almost every day. He’ll love the idea of doing some exercises while we’re out there. Thanks!

  4. Do you have any suggestions for cardio inside? I live in Arizona and the only time it’s under 90 degree is 5am (eek!). We have an opposite problem than the rest of the country. I have been doing a lot of strength exercises inside, but I’ve been struggling to find cardio exercises.
