Decorating With Marble No Matter Your Budget

When it comes to home décor, I love combining something classic and traditional with styles that are more modern and fun. The white marble trend definitely meets this criteria! Traditionally, one of the most expensive ways to decorate a home is with slabs of stunning marble. It’s a cool and sophisticated look that never goes out of style.

We used to think of using stone in the house on a grander scale: marble sinks, tiled floors, and countertops. Now, thank goodness for our wallets, designers are using marble in unexpected ways and on a much smaller scale. The end result is a look that is clean, sleek and won’t break your bank.

5 Steps To Creating The Living Room Of Your Dreams

When it comes to styling anything — an outfit, your hair, a home, it can be especially difficult to execute your vision without a certain level of expertise. That’s part of what makes stylists and designers so essential. They are able to take a concept or idea and make it a reality, in the best way possible. I turn to the special specialists in my life in areas such as home decor because they truly know their craft. Not only do I enjoy the end result but I learn so much working with these artists. If you love my at-home style then you’ll love my interior designer Jake Arnold. Jake was generous enough to give this reader’s home some special attention, just as he does for me. I love the suggestions he made for Venita’s room refresh!

Venita,

When looking at this space I see many quick, easy and inexpensive ways to refresh and spruce up the room. Before changing out any furniture or adding any accessories, there is a quick to-do list that will ensure a fresh new slate to work with.

1. Painting the walls a soft white will instantly refresh the space and add a new lease of life and the perfect backdrop when adding in other textures and materials to create a well balanced space. Try Benjamin Moore’s Simply White

2. The fireplace is the main feature of the room, so it is important to either work with it to add to the overall aesthetic of the room or to mask it. I always believe less is more. Instead of introducing another color or bold print that may become tired and fall into the trend of cement tiles that is a trend that is already getting old, use a simple natural hand made tile to add texture and interest. Look for Zellige Tiles in white.

3. Mirrors in any space are a must! Not only does it make your space feel larger and add depth its a great way of bouncing light around the room. Hang a mirror over the fireplace for maximum sophistication.

4. When it comes to plants and natural elements a tree is the best way to add life to any space big or small. The current tree in this room needs an update to reflect the soft, muted feel of the furnishings that I think work best in this space.

5. When in doubt do less — not more — and strip back strong elements first before adding more to avoid a messy result. Stick to neutral large pieces and introduce color through muted pillows, textiles and greenery.

Ask Jules: Dreamy Bedroom Decor

Hi Jules,

I need your help! I live in Toronto and bought a condo about a year ago (yay for home ownership!). I’ve slowly been making it my own, but have really struggled to come up with a plan for my bedroom.

askjules-bedroom-1

As you can see, my bedroom is white on white on white and needs some sprucing up! I’ve recently purchased a grey padded headboard to start my redecorating, but haven’t been successful coming up with a plan to make it feel like the perfect escape. I love the look of shiplap and gallery walls, but have been cautious adding those as I don’t have a lot of square footage.

askjules-bedroom-2

I’ve included pictures of what I’m working with; you’ll see I have big blank wall and have no idea what to put there, also need help with what to do above my headboard. Do I remove the mirrors over the bedside tables? Add in shiplap wallpaper on the wall? So many questions — would love help!!!

Thank you,
Meghan

Meghan,

Congrats on your new condo! As exciting as it is to have a clean slate, it’s also daunting because the options are endless! I love the grey padded bed and headboard! This style is classic and comfortable.

I am a big believer in bedrooms being decorated with serenity, rest and relaxation in mind. To me, that translates to light, natural colors and a clean aesthetic. Luckily, you’re mostly there with all that white!

I do like the mirrors next to your bed but I’d like to see them above your bed, hung horizontally and spaced apart. What do you think? If you decide not to use those, a gallery wall would look really nice (the gallery wall plus those mirrors might be a bit much).

I’d keep the frames light and simple and choose consistent art or photos (for example: all black and whites or all nature images) to keep with your “perfect escape” vibe.

I’ve created a mood board below with items I’d choose to turn the place you dream into a dreamy space. Keep me posted on the renovations! Continue Reading

Ask Jules: Dorm Room Redo

I haven’t lived in a dorm room, but I have lived on location while filming a movie and on a tour bus while on the road, so I know the importance of making the place you spend time in feel warm and personal.

Hals’ email hit a chord with me — plus it was so funny it made me LOL. I especially loved that she included lots of pictures. I gave her my best advice, but I think it would be awesome if you would jump in and add your own thoughts in the comments!

Hi Jules,

I NEED YOUR HELP!! I attend Nipissing University in North Bay, Canada. I love the school because it’s small and has amazing trails around campus. We even have our own waterfall!

But I have to admit, I sometimes feel like Bella Swan living in Forks. It’s grey, cold and damp. (Still waiting for a cute vampire to show up!) I have attached pictures of my dorm room and I just want some tips on how to make it feel warmer and more like home.

I love boho, plants, fluffy blankets, etc. Your collaboration with Joss and Main was my favourite! I love those kinds of looks but never know how to achieve it. I am super passionate about art; I’ve started to collect one piece every time I travel somewhere new.

Obviously being a student I’m on a tight budget, but I’m in this room constantly studying and reading, and I’m so tired of feeling like I live in a prison cell. Personally, I think the white brick gives off the perfect jail cell vibe. One of the photos includes my beautiful view (the grey skies match the grey buildings… how cute). Also I included a picture of my DIY lamp, where I put all my old tickets, of course it’s a picture of my favourite ones, MOVE LIVE TOUR and a Leafs vs Capitals hockey game where I saw your boy Brooks.

Your Biggest Fan,
Hals xoxo

PS: I love DIYs! I always do the ones you put on your website. I love the lip scrub made out of coffee grounds and the bath bombs were super fun to make! Anyways, hopefully you can help a girl out! Thanks for everything, Jules! Continue Reading

My new home had a great outdoor area, which I wanted to turn into an outside living space. I envisioned a relaxing sitting area and a dining table with great rustic chairs. The story or the vibe I wanted this space to give was something earthy, natural and fresh but also young, modern and inviting.

How To Care For Cut Tulips

Nothing says spring like having fresh flowers in the house, and right now I’m loving tulips! They come in the most gorgeous colors, and have such a sophisticated, architectural shape they can instantly make any room seem like it’s professionally decorated.

If I’m going to have a beautiful bouquet on display, I want to keep it fresh as long as possible. I did some research on the best way to take care of cut flowers, and discovered it’s a lot less difficult than I thought! Continue Reading

DIY Gorgeous Dried Flowers

Whenever I receive flowers (or buy them for myself because — why not?) I always wish they’d last longer, especially if they hold sentimental value. Of course the only option for forever flowers is to dry them, but I never seem to get it right. Often they start to stink or fall apart; I have yet to dry a perfect batch.

It wasn’t until I found this simple trick that I was able to simplify the process. And wouldn’t you know, the solution was right under my nose all along! All you’ll need is a sizable amount of silica gel. You know, those tiny white baggies that come in the box with your new shoes and most other items? They say, “Silica Gel: Do not eat. Throw away.” Those are silica gel!

Their purpose is to suck the moisture from the air keeping those new products dry and fresh. (Light bulb moment, right?!) You can either start collecting these little guys or buy them in bulk — but please remember to keep them out of reach from pets and small children.

4 Steps To Perfectly-Dried Flowers

You’ll need:

Silica Gel
• A jar, bowl or container that has a tightly-fitting lid.
• Flowers! Continue Reading
