Whether I’m packing for a trip or planning out a jam-packed day, choosing versatile clothes and accessories allows me to enjoy the journey rather than worry about having extra things on hand to change into. I like to keep things as low maintenance as possible. To me that means packing less by wearing styles that can fit into any scenario — while being fashion forward and comfortable, of course.
Besides my sunscreen, which I never leave the house without no matter the time of year, here is a list of my double duty must haves that will take you from the beach, to brunch, out to dinner, and back again!
Anyone who follows me on Instagram knows how much I travel with my furry babies, Lexi and Harley. I love watching them get to explore new territories, whether it’s kicking up sand at the beach or licking freshly-fallen snow. As much fun as it is venturing away from home as a family, I know my first priority is always to keep them safe. I am constantly keeping an eye out for products meant to protect my pups while we are away from home.
Regardless if it’s a road trip or a quick drive to the store, dogs are just like us, and should really be wearing a seatbelt. One hard press on the brakes is enough to send an animal tumbling. I can’t bear the thought of what could happen in the event of an accident.
Brooks and I can’t stop talking about the best trip of our lives: Africa! While visiting Kruger National Park, we stayed at what is now my most favorite hotel ever. Lebombo Lodge is absolutely incredible. It feels like you’re staying in a tree house made of glass, where below you can see everything from hippos, impala and crocs roaming around.
I couldn’t wait to wake up at 5am (seriously!) because that’s when we got picked up by Andrew, our tracker, and our driver, Chris. In an open car, they took us out into the wild where Andrew would spot cheetah, leopards, elephants, lions, buffalo and more. We even found rhino which was the hardest to find because there aren’t many left — they’re sadly becoming extinct.
Brooks and I were over-the-moon excited to book a trip to Africa. Both of us have always dreamed about going on an African safari. Brooks was especially wanting to see Victoria Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world.
Before we left, we snapped pics of our complete outfits not only for fun but also to stay organized. When you have photos to reference what shoes go with what pants and what top, you’ll spend less time figuring out your outfit and more time enjoying your vacation!
I’m excited to introduce you all to Lauren Kay Sims, a fashion blogger with a unique style that I truly love. Her looks are always incredibly put together and sophisticated without being inaccessible or over the top, which is right up my alley for day-to-day style.
I asked her to share her tips for traveling in style — just in time for Spring Break! So no matter where you’re going or how you’re getting there, Lauren has some ideas to keep you looking and feeling your best on your journey.
Hey ya’ll! Lauren Sims here from laurenkaysims.com. I am beyond excited and honored to be posting for Julianne Hough today! I’ve been a major fan of Julianne (and her hair!) for as long as I can remember, so this is truly an honor for me to be featured on her website today.
A little bit about me: I’m Texas girl who loves all things fashion and fitness, plus my husband of two years now and our golden retriever, Beau. With spring break around the corner, I wanted to talk to ya’ll today about how to travel in style!
Beauty editors and bloggers have published countless lists of various serums, masks, and other must-have in flight items. While I’m sure their arsenal of products all work wonders, I prefer to keep these types of things to a minimum. The fewer products taking up space in my carry-on bag, the better.
Below are the basic can’t-travel-without-em skin savers I always have on hand as well as some common sense tips. So no matter where you are going, you arrive with your freshest face.
My #1 rule: No Makeup. If you’re flying straight from work or an event, or you want your babe to see the best painted version of you before saying goodbye at the drop off, okay fine. But wash it off before stepping foot on that flight. If you’re incredibly uncomfortable going without, a tinted-moisturizer, rose-hued lip balm, and a touch of mascara will do the job.
When I’m still at home, I gently wash my face and smooth on multiple layers of thick moisturizing cream. I also dab an extra layer of eye cream under my eye and up around my lower brow.
Drink lots of water! Flying can be super drying for your skin and body. It is worth the additional trips to the loo to keep you quenched from the inside out.
Here’s everything you will need in one clear, sealable bag:
As soon as Brooks and I got engaged, we got to thinking: where should we get married? Brooks’ family is in Canada. Mine is Tennessee, Nevada and Utah. Our friends are spread out all across America and throughout Europe, too. A destination wedding would make sense, but where?
Am I the get married on the beach, toes in the sand kind of girl? Or would we rather do something unexpected in the winter, maybe in the snowcapped mountains? I’ve been to beautiful weddings at vineyards, ranches, on tropical islands, and they were each stunning in their own way.
Many of you have asked about the bus set up on our moving MOVE tour. Ask and you shall receive! There are three buses. Derek and I share one, the crew is on another and the dancers have their own. My room is in the back of D-Man’s and my bus. It’s pretty nice! I even have a cozy queen size bed. It’s where I like to snuggle up with an SVU episode or two. Okay, it’s usually a full on marathon.
Before we get started, please note how hilarious our bus is. What’s with those blue flames?! We like to pretend we’re big time rock stars from like an ’80s hair band or something. Doesn’t that seem more appropriate than just a bus full of dancers?
Our day off in Orlando, Florida, can be summed up in one word: MAGIC! As in Magic Kingdom, that is. That’s right, we went to Disney World! It rained like crazy the whole time so we had to wear massive ponchos all day. We look hilarious in all our pictures! We didn’t let the downpour rain on our parade, though, the MOVE dancers and I screamed through Space Mountain, giggled through the jungles of the Animal Kingdom and even stopped to say hello to Minnie and Mickey.
None of us had ever had turkey leg like these. Thankfully we caught our first bites on camera!
When I’m on tour, I take the few days I have off very seriously! I like to eat, drink and do as many things as the city we’re visiting has to offer. Last week in Austin, I definitely did just that.
I started my morning at Hillside Farmacy, a quirky restaurant that supports local farmers for their farm-to-table feasts. The space used to be a pharmacy in the 1950s, hence the name. They cleverly use vintage prescription bottles as salt and pepper shakers! The original rich wood cabinets, artsy murals, tile work and crystal doorknobs create an authentically-worn-in warmth. My fried egg sandwich (avocado, aioli, sprouts, fried green tomato) was off-the-charts delicious!
