As soon as Brooks and I learned the classic film Out of Africa was filmed at the resort we were staying at, we wanted to see the movie. We waited for a rainy day and watched Out of Africa — in Africa. We were so moved by the true story based on Karen Blixen’s life in Kenya and the incredible things she did for the Maasai people. In the romantic drama, there is an iconic scene where Robert Redford and Meryl Streep are having a picnic. Of course upon discovering that the location this scene was shot at was just over the hillside, I wanted to pay homage to Blixen and her story by recreating the iconic photo from the movie — picnic and all!
Hey, everyone! It’s Spencer Barnes again, here to chat some more about skincare and makeup. This time, we are going in-depth about bridal looks. Since it’s wedding season, I figured many of you brides-to-be might appreciate my makeup tips for your big day. This list is how I approach creating the perfect looks for my clients and friends on their wedding days. I hope you find it just as helpful!
Hi there, fellow Julianne fans! Anita Patrickson here. As Julianne’s friend and stylist for over six years, we’ve had great times in even greater gowns! This year, I worked with Jules on finding the one dress that mattered most: her wedding dress.
Julianne and I went back and forth, discussing it quite a bit. Of course we’ve selected many gowns for her before for special events like the Golden Globes and Dancing with the Stars (I’m fairly certain she has worn every style and color under the sun). However, it was important to Julianne that this dress would be a different type of special. She wanted something timeless, clean, and elegant: a dress she could look back on years from now and still be awed by its classic beauty. I couldn’t agree more!
Because celebrity clients have tried on a million gowns before, they have more pre-planned idea of what they prefer for their wedding gown. But with my girlfriends and non-celebrity clients, they are in completely new and exciting territory. Often, these brides-to-be will end up picking a dress they never thought they would wear. My first piece of advice is to always keep an open mind and try on every style — you will probably be surprised what looks and feels right!
Some of you may already know who I am but for those of you who don’t, Hi! I’m Spencer Barnes, Julianne’s friend and make up artist for nearly a decade. While Jules is away, she asked me to drop by her site and share some of my pre-wedding skincare tips. We specifically thought you might be interested to know how Julianne and my other clients prepare their pretty faces for some of life’s biggest events.
Whether you’re a bride-to-be or you have another type of major event coming up, one thing we all want on our big day is clear, glowing, gorgeous skin. This 10-Day Countdown is my guide for getting ready to put your absolute best face forward.
We may be halfway through the summer, but wedding season is still in full swing! Whether a bride, a groom, or a guest, we all want to look and feel our greatest on the big day. If feeling good inside and out is the goal, it only makes sense to indulge in foods that offer beauty benefits that have a profound effect on our skin, nails, and hair. Bridal Nutritionist Kara Stout specializes in recipes that make you feel even more beautiful than you already are. Whether it’s for the big day or a special event, her Something Blue Smoothie is something for everyone to sip-up before you or your loved one walk down the aisle!
This delicious wedding-inspired smoothie is a nutrition-packed breakfast that is low in sugar, high in protein, and a great source of healthy fats and fiber. We can also sneak in some leafy greens that provide vitamins A, C, E and K, folic acid, chlorophyll, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and more.
An added bonus: The blueberries contribute to glowing, youthful skin because of the abundance of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals — and the Vitamin C found in blueberries can help with the maintenance and synthesis of collagen. A popular buzzword for good reason, collagen is included in the smoothie as well. Collagen is an abundant protein found in our bodies. However, as we age, our collagen production naturally begins to decrease. On top of that, an unhealthy diet, such as one too high in sugar, or an unhealthy lifestyle, can also lead to a decrease in collagen, which is SO not ideal. Adding collagen peptides into this recipe gives you a head start on your path to healthier hair, skin, and nails.
I’m officially married to the love of my life! The past few days have been some of the best I’ve ever had. To be surrounded by that much love was a feeling that will stay with me forever. After all the fittings and tastings and planning, I thought I had an idea of what our wedding would be like but I can certainly say our big day completely surpassed my wildest dreams. It was just beautiful.
While Brooks and I are away getting our honeymoon on, I’ve enlisted upon some of my closest confidants to keep you informed and entertained. They’ve got some good stuff up their sleeves! I’ll be reading along with you. See you when we get back!
In the meantime, you can see all the lovely details of our wedding celebration in the latest issue of People Magazine – on newsstands everywhere this Friday, July 14!
My beautiful sister Sharee hosted my awesome bridal shower in Utah last week. Believe me when I say I was absolutely blown away by the amount of thought and creativity that went into this shower! Sharee enlisted creative genius Heidi Swapp to help her go all out – and all out they went! We had a perfume making station, personalized bracelets, the most delicious food, even customized lemonades, they truly thought of everything! There was so much to do and everything looked so fantastic.
I loved getting to spend time with so many of my friends and family. It was truly one of the best days, and the perfect way to celebrate my engagement. Being surrounded by my loved ones is my favorite place to be!
Heidi took boards from her recently-launched Letterboard collection and used them to create the signage and menus for each station. Heidi also used these boards as decor by adding love quotes and placing them around the shower.
Fun fact: Heidi’s inspiration for the shower was the “love fern” from the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. With that in mind she included ferns in the centerpieces on the tables and at each station. The fern was used on the invitations, save the dates, napkin holders, perfume labels, advice book and the party favors. It was unique, clever, and fun. My kind of party!
One of the many things I love about being styled by Anita Patrickson is that she identifies dresses that make me feel sexy, but are still tasteful and classy. One of the common misconceptions about dressing sexy is that it involves showing a lot of skin — I’ve learned it’s the illusion of those things that makes an outfit sexy. And the character of the woman wearing the clothes, of course!
Now that we are in the throes of wedding season, a lot of us are looking for that perfect wedding-guest dress. I’ve compiled some of my favorite looks that make for excellent wedding guest inspirations! Before you shop, inspect your invitation for dress code instructions to ensure you’re properly attired.
A few weeks ago, my girlfriends and family hosted my bachelorette party down in Mexico. It was one of the most memorable weekends of my life! There are few instances where almost all the ladies you love most come together to celebrate love –- and to me, that’s the best part of the bachelorette tradition. When I received this Ask Jules email from Ami about throwing the perfect bachelorette party for her friend, I knew exactly who to turn to for advice: Lauren Bushnell. Lauren is another bride-to-be, and she also knows a thing or two about being a bachelorette (wink wink).
Read on for her awesome suggestions for hosting the ultimate LA-based bachelorette bash!
I am SO excited to be able to get your advice on how to throw the perfect bachelorette party for my bff! You seem to throw the best parties whether it be Bachelor viewing night, family gatherings at the lake or summer hangs by the pool!!
Carrie and I have been best friends since high school and she is the last of our group to get married and just a super special girl!!:) There will be 10 of us and we want to keep it flirty and fun with just a little bit of sexy to make her turn red! Can you give me some suggestions for the LA area in late April?
I LOVE bachelorette parties! Having all your girls in one place, celebrating love while also letting loose is the perfect equation for fun. Planning a wedding is a lot of work so bach parties are a much needed escape from the stresses of preparing for the big day.
I personally have always liked the more low-key getaways. Los Angeles is a great place for the ultimate girls trip. Don’t get me wrong — I love a good weekend in Vegas, but when it comes to Bachelorette parties that type of adventure is predictable and overdone.
When it comes to LA, Santa Monica is a great place to enjoy both the beach and the city. There are plenty of bars nearby, lots of good shopping, and great food. It’s the best place to both relax and celebrate at the same time!
If you follow me on Instagram you already know I just had my epic bachelorette party. For my BEACHelorette, my closest girlfriends and family took a trip with me to lovely Mexico. This weekend away was so special and unforgettable! It was so much more memorable than almost any vacation I’d ever taken because I was surrounded by some of the most important people in my life.
In addition to the fun we had dancing, boating, and swimming, we also played with our style. Although my captain’s hat tops them all, everyone brought their cutest bathing suits, cut out dresses, fringed accessories and cover-ups.
