The Magical Ways Of Water: Your 21-Day Challenge

Sometimes we need a little nudge or reminder to do the simplest yet most important things. Like drinking enough water throughout the day, for example. We all know how vital H2O is for your skin, muscles, kidneys, digestive tract and more. It has been recommended that we drink approximately at least eight glasses of water every day. Some days, I know I certainly sip more and other days I could definitely do a better job at hydrating.

I saw on inspirational supernova Amy Purdy’s Instagram post that she downs two glasses first thing in the morning. She does this to hydrate and wake up her digestive track, preparing it for coffee, tea, breakfast and more. I always try to remember to have a glass before every snack and meal but it doesn’t always work out. I’m not completely missing out on the benefits however since 20% of our fluid intake comes from natural foods like veggies and fruit.

Amy’s post encouraged me to make more of a conscience effort every day to properly hydrate. Some people say it takes 21 days to form a habit, so I’m going to put that theory to test by challenging myself (feel free to join me!) to drink two glasses of water first thing in the morning and one before each meal starting today. My goal is to make it through the 21 days without missing a drop and ideally keep it flowing (pun intended) moving forward.

Another important reminder: too much of a good thing isn’t such a good idea. Don’t go overboard on too much water (yes it’s possible!) or drink all your daily ounces at once. It’s very dangerous and can lead to serious health risks.

  1. I literally have been forcing myself to drink water lately. I was told by a physician that all of my problems (back pains, fatigue, etc) come from dehydration! She also said that my body cells specifically require excessive amounts of water to function properly which terrified me since I know my water intake is already less than recommended. I am going with you on this challenge 110%!!!

  2. I am lucky that I don’t really like anything but water and milk. I may have a glass of sweet tea once a week, maybe. I started the habit early in life as a dancer and gymnast nothing hydrated me like water. Also water is FREE! Knock 2+ dollars off of your bill when you go out!:)

  3. Great post Julianne! I ALWAYS get my clients at Peck Nutrition to focus on hydration. I agree with Amy, but I squeeze fresh lemon in, it helps you tune in to your digestive system and gives you added vitamin C (or you use fresh lime juice) And bring a water bottle with you where you go, and look at the colour of urine, it should be like champagne (unless of course you take B vitamins, then it will be a bit yellow).   4. Water is my drink of choice. I feel so much better when I get all my water in. My rule of thumb is one half of your body weight in ounces of water, i.e. if you weight 150, drink 75 ounces.

  5. As I sit here in pain from a severe Charley horse that happen during my Zumba class earlier. I sit here and was telling myself that I haven’t been drinking enough water. Dehydration I feel brought this severe cramping in my leg on. So your post is so timely. I understand and know I need to drink more. Thank you so much for this post.

An erudite gentleman- with whom I have no affiliation -has written about this in depth, Charles Duhigg.”The Power of Habit” is the book. Nonetheless, you raise a great issue.

  7. I drink a sh*t load of water, approx. 3L a day if I can get it up with. But starting with two glasses of water seems like a brilliant thing. I also heard that you shouldn’t drink cold water because than make “jump” your body of the cold.

  8. Great idea! Drinking water for me is even easier in the summer when the temperatures are soaring. When I’m hot and thirsty, icy water is the only thing that satisfies my thirst. I also love to add lemon. Cheers!

  12. The concept that it takes 21 days to form a new habit is something that I live by and I’m so so happy that you mentioned it!
    Also for anyone that might be interested, there’s a free app called “Plant nanny” in which a lil plant reminds you to drink just the right amount of water every day! It’s customizable and you can even put in your weight, level of exercise, age, etc.!! I sound like I’m sponsored by them or something (which I’m not, sadly) but seriously this app is my life saver!!
